I think the "settlement" road sounds better, but I would have to question what they will be reporting to the CRA's regarding your account.

Because they are settling for less than the amount owed, can they mark your account as "charged-off" because they didn't receive the full balance?

It would be worth it to try to get an agreement in writing as to how it will be reported.
