CC Collection for $5900 on a 5yr charge off

A collection agency(Colorado) has filed a lawsuit/summons on my wives CC that was last payed on almost 5yrs ago (5 yrs in Feb 2003)the law firm is in Spokane,WA we live in Seattle, 300mi away. The debt is for $6500. I was comfortable in my position based on a lawyer friend who stated that this debt was already past the SOL for Washington state, and they would be hard pressed to pursue this collection any further. Now I'm having second thoughts since recieving the summons... I've got 20 days to respond to this and figure out what kind of footing I'm standing on (if any). So nobody gets the wrong idea, we are good consumers with good credit ratings(albeit this one), we ran into problems on this CC because of a business debt, and once the CC company went overboard(almost criminally...) with the charges, we cutoff all relations with them. Appreciate any experience and/or knowledge anybody might want to share in our little drama. Feel free to email me.
