Collection agency threating to have boyfriend put in jail

My fience has an old debt between him and his ex wife that took place in 1993, there hasn't been any payments on this and my fience said he didn't even know this bill existed. Today he was delivered papers to appear in court in 4 days. He called the collection agency about this as we don't even live in the same town anymore and they said he could either show up with 3,000.00 or have 250.00 for down on a contract and make 250.00 monthly payments. If he doesn't show up they will rewrite it again and if he still doesn't show up or have the money he will be put in jail. We live in Oregon which is where the debt occured and from looking on this site it shows 6 years for the SOL. Anyone that can give us some info on if they can actually thow him in jail please help us. We are both on unemployment and I have two childred to support and he's also paying child support on his 2 kids.
