About three years ago I closed my US Bank account. I thought that all the outstanding checks from this account had cleared. Last fall, I attempted to open a rental account with Hastings Video and was declined due to a hold by Telecheck. When I called the 1-800 number to inquire about this debt, I was told that it was from early 2000 and that notice had been sent to me on 7 different occasions. However, I never received any notice as they had an incorrect address and my name was spelled incorrectly. I requested that TeleCheck send me verification of the debt to my current address and was advised that notice and verification would be sent.

It is now 4 months, 1 letter and 7 telephone calls later. Evidently, the check was done by electronic check, where you write a check and the run it though a machine like a debit card and return the check to you. The company has since gone out of business and no longer has any of it's records and TeleCheck can't even seem to print out any notice of the debt.

I have contacted my old bank who is in the process of trying to find copies of my statements for that time period, but as it's old, it's taking quite a while.

What can I do?! I've taken several courses covering the FDCPA and it seems like TeleCheck should need to come up with some form of verification of the debt, shouldn't they? Or at least send me notice of it?

If anyone has any ideas, please let me know. Thank you!
