Sorry to be so mealy mouthed-- but I say "generally" and "most States" because I have not checked every single State's rules of civil procedure.

"Standing" means being entitled to file a suit or to defend one.

A person who does not own the debt and is not a lawyer representing the claim of the owner has no "standing" and cannot file as a plaintiff.

By the same reasoning, the spouse or parent of the debtor cannot be named as a defendant.
