You can contact the CBR's and request a consumer statment be placed on your record - and also order an investigation on any accounts you do not rememeber - Opting out does nothing but enact the GLB - Graham Leech Bliley ( spelling?) act where as that credit report can not share information to outside agencys - ie "pre approved credit cards" and other junk mail you may recieve. Individual CA's also give you this opportunity twice a year to Opt out - it is just preventing them from sharing your information to other creditors - called Skiptracing. Frankly I would simply ask for Validation of the Debt. That may help you remember the debt. Mean while - request the original documentation. If they say none can be obtained with out then having to pay full balance - see what the settlement is - and weigh that against the time and effort you may put into proving that debt is not yours. Contrary to popular belief - Burden of proof lies with the debtor - not the agency.
