Need debt consolidation credit advice

I currently have excellent credit but would like to consolidate my debts...student loan and credit cards. Consumer Credit Counseling services would appear to drop my debt considerably...perhaps several thousands, however I've been getting mixed signals on wether or not using this type of service would ruin my credit rating. The services have told me that they do not report to the credit bureau and my credit report will not be affected. Others have said that it will show on my report that I have used this service and creditors might look unfavorably, but my point rating would not be affected. Does it matter if my point rating stays the same? As I said, I have excellent credit. I want to protect it but also am wondering if it might be worth a minor credit blemish to save several thousand dollars now. Does anyone have any experience with this?!
Any advice?!
