need advice as to where to start or even if i should try?

I have a question. I have about $6,000 of debt of credit cards and store credit cards. My qestion is now that they all have been turned over to collection (as i stopped paying all at the same time) due to unemployment....where should i start to try and repay this. Im very affraid of the thought of jail time over this, and i would like to send money...but a year has already passed and i dont now what to do. I live in south carolina and am not sure how long ill have to avoid these people as they are very mean over the phone and if i say i can send some money, i get "you need to send the full amount"! I cant afford that and im behond frustrated! I think about this everyday and see no way out for a little bit of peace of mind. Any advice is greatly appreciated....thanks!
