My mother just passed away 4 weeks ago in her home state of Arizona. To our families surprise, her estate is horribly insolvent, unlikely to even cover funeral expenses. I have met with a probate attorney in Arizona, and will be personal representative. I live now in South Carolina, and as far as I know, have very good credit (score > 800 when I got my mortgage 2.5 years ago). A further complicating issue involves 2 of her debts. To my surprise, after her death, while cleaning her apartment, I discovered that she still had my name on both an overdrafted checking account/ credit line and a credit card (total $16000). She was the primary cardholder for the credit card account, although my name was the only one on the statement (listed and sent only to her address). My name was put on these accounts nearly 15 years ago, when I was in school, to allow me access to money and emergency cash (the accounts were both established in her old home state of Ohio). i have not signed for anything on either of these accounts for at least 10 years, and quite honestly completely forgot about them. Neither creditor has ever attempted to contact me (even though I have 2 other credit accounts with Citibank, the credit card agency) My question: Does a pre-emptive letter to the credit bureaus do me any good at this point, at least verifying my addresses over the past ten years. Both companies have "put the accounts on hold" for a few months after I notified them of my mother's death and got past the first phone answerers (who both requested I make a payment the day after her funeral!). Thank you in advance for any advice you can offer.
