Old Debt

I had a credit card with Montgomery Wards which I stopped paying on in 1989 or early 1990 (I had no job at that time and therefore no means of paying them). Recently I received a phone call from CAMCO stating that they had purchased the debt from MW and that I had to pay them $1,400 or they were going to take me to court. My husband and I talked with them and got them to reduce the debt to $500. I then received another phone call from them stating that they had to have authorization to do an electronic transfer on January 20, 2003. I told them that I was not on our checking account and asked if that was still ok. They stated that it was, so I gave it to them, with authorization to do a transfer on January 20. My husband talked with a couple of people and our credit union. They told him that since I was not on the account that they were not authorized to have it. He then told the credit union what was happening and they said that they would not allow the transaction to go through. He called CAMCO and asked them to send us a letter stating the terms of settlement and what the bill was for. They refused and said they had sent one several months before. I did not remember receiving one, however. Then they told him that they would e-mail us a copy of their terms. However, we had to keep calling them and leaving messages to get them to e-mail the copies to us. We still have not received anything in writing and the three e-mails they sent are rather confusing. They state that if we send $400 by Western Union on 12/30/02, that would settle the account in full or we could send $500 by February 20 and that would settle the account. However, the person my husband spoke with told him that if we paid $400 by January 20, that would settle the account. We can't seem to get any straight answers from these people. Any advice. (We were living in California at the time this debt was incurred and are currently living in Ohio)
