Being Sued

I was served papers I'm being sued by a CA for Discover. The debt is mine but I have not had the funds to pay off completely that's why it went ignored. They are asking for original debt of $8,000 and attorney fees of $1,500. Of course I still don't have this kind of money and do not want a judgement on my credit, but have recently sold an old car and would like to see if they would settle for $3,000. How do I go about doing this being they've already filed suit? Do I state this within court documents or contact the attorney's office directly? This is all fairly simple and do not want to tap into my settlement money for an attorney if I don't have to.
