Oh yeah.. they are theives for sure !!! When did this happen ? If you didn't get anything in writing from them on the $50 thing, giving them your account number was just handing them free access to your checking account. They can and did take EVERYTHING they wanted. You're lucky they didn't take more, and if I were you I'd keep a real close eye on my account.. or even close that one and open a new one if you can. Once they have your account access you're risking them coming back for more.

RULE 1 - Get everything in writing.
RULE 2 - NEVER give out your banking info
RULE 3 - Don't EVER make any 'deals' with a CA on they phone, they LIE, LIE, LIE, and will twist your words to their benefit, and then they'll turn around and use a tape of your conversation against you.

Per the FDCPA, they are not allowed to solicit for any type of post-dated check, and that includes electronic 'checks'.

I'd call the bank and file a complaint for an unathorized transaction by CAMCO and see if they can get your money back. SCAMCO defrauded you, it might work, even if you don't have anything in writing from them agreeing to only $50.
