Pretty good Stefan- However, just because an account is "written off" by a creditor does NOT mean it can't be collected on legally. A charge-off or write off is an internal accounting procedure. In general,if you are planning to return to the US, and are able to pay on your defaulted accounts, you should as Stefan said, get a current credit report, notify the CRA's that you are out of the US, opt out to prevent id theft, and determine the status of your defaulted accounts. As a matter of personal principle I DO NOT suggest paying any collection agency a dime, unless you are forced to by legal action. However, that is just my own personal opinion. If you return to the US, the legally collectible status of those accounts you have not paid will depend upon which State you reside in on your return.
