Were you served a summons that is giving you 30 days or did you get a collection letter that gives you 30 days to dispute ???

If you haven't been served, then its just a collection letter from a debt collector (ie. the lawyer). You don't HAVE to respond to a collection letter unless you want to dispute or make some kind of payment arrangements.

If you want to make payment arrangments that YOU can afford, send them a certified letter with your offer of payments. They'll probably refuse at first, but don't back down. If they do sue you, you will at least have some evidence in court that you were willing to pay but they wouldn't work with you.
