I'm getting ready to start a new job, but I will be an independant contractor. They won't be taking any taxes out, so I am responsible for paying my state and federal taxes myself. If I understand correctly, no one, not even the government, can garnish my wages. Is this correct? I have a defaulted student loan that I need to get taken care of, but will be making very little the first month or two. Once I get situated, I'm going to get the loan into rehab, but don't want to worry about them trying to garnish my wages before then. Am I pretty safe until I can afford the payments to get it rehabbed? Thanks!
