Any person can purchase an unpaid debt and make any legal effort to collect on that debt. If a third party purchases an account and pursues legal action to collect, it is within the law. The only thing you need to notified of is the name of the original creditor if different from the current creditor and the amount owed. The best way to avoid the collectors and attorneys is to request complete validation of the debt. Depending on the age of the debt, it is unlikely they will be able to provide it. That just means they wont pursue you, it does not mean it can come off your crdit report
