I know that a CA cannot sue you if they have been assigned the debt. In that case, only the original creditor can sue you (for the most part). But, I thought the CA COULD sue you if it actually owns the debt because it was purchased.

Clarification on this one?

CA's can NOT sue you, only the original creditor (in most states) is allowed to sue. A CA cannot make threats of legal actions they do not intend to take or cannot legally take. In most states they CAN'T sue you, its purely a threat to scare you into paying.
