Tuition and Collection

I've skimmed the boards before posting, but am still a little confused... I received a letter at the end of Nov stating that I owe $2K for tuition that was never paid in grad school. (I didn't open it 'til recently, as I assumed it was junk mail -- so the 30 day response isn't an option.) In the last month, I've gotten about 15 voice mails from a guy who gives his name (but no company or reason for calling) and says he needs to verify my employment and that I need to call him back by 5:00 that day.

I didn't receive that letter via certified mail, and the guy on voice mail is using my maiden name and not saying why he's calling. Should I just continue to ignore his calls? I think the employment verification is just a ruse to get me to call, but is there any chance they'd find out through other means and start harassing me at work (or worse, contacting work)?

The debt is 4 years old (college in IL, debt collector in CA), so doesn't meet the SOL. This is the first I've heard of it - the college never contacted me to collect. I don't know if the debt is valid, as I didn't pay my tuition myself...but don't want to get my father involved. If I have to pay it, I will - but would prefer to avoid if at all possible.

Sorry for the long post. Any advice would be greatly appreciated!
