I had a Discover credit card that I owed about $10,000 on. I did not pay for over a year and a law office contacted me and said that they would put me on a payment program for six months and then I could lower my monthly payment and negotiate my debt. Well, I have been paying $300 a month for 10 months via electronic check (I've paid $3,000). I told them I wanted to lower my monthly payment to $150 per month and mailed a letter to the law office. When I asked them to verify that my letter was received, they said that is not valid because I am no longer on this program, but the next day, they withdrew $300 from my checking account! They were rude with me on the phone and told me I was being uncoperative and are now demanding that I pay $4,500 by the end of the month or they will 'take further action' against me. Can this be true and is there anything I can do? I have closed my checking account, so they can no longer withdraw funds from my account and mailed them a certified letter.
