There are a couple of things you can do. First, when you get to court you will probably be offered either a payment plan or a settlement 'deal', so be prepared for that. Take along any papers you have that will show your financial status to prove what you can or cannot afford. Don't agree to anything unless you get it in writing.

Second, they can garnish wages in TN if they get a judgment. However, in TN we can file a motion that requests that you be allowed to pay the judgment in payments in lieu of garnishment. Here's where the financial papers come in - when/if you file this motion, the JUDGE will decide what your payment will be, so having your financial papers in order and copies ready for a judge to review are necessary.

We get $4000 in exemptions in TN for personal property, but you have to file those exemptions with the court. Obviously, there is a way to do this. I have a link, somewhere, that has samples of these forms/letters you can use to do both of these things. I'll find it and come back and post it.
