You need to find out exactly when the last payment was made. If it was 1997, then the SOL HAS run out and you don't have to pay the CA anything !

Pull your credit report, get either the Date of last activity (DOLA) or a charge-off date. If you get DOLA, great, that's the last payment. If you can only get a charge-off date, subtract 180 days from that date and that would be the start of the SOL. If you have any old checks or statements, even easier.

Once you've determined that it IS past the SOL, send them WhyChat's expired SOL letter and tell them to pound sand !! Also, if it has expired, and they're dumb enough to sue you, you use the expired SOL as your defense and it will be thrown out - no judgment !
