Oh yeah, it seems sneaky alright. Are you sure this isn't in their CC Agreement ? Usually this is documented, buried in that teeny-tiny print they use. A person at Chase Bank, on the single occasion I've EVER take a cash advance on a credit card, told me that the ONLY way to have your payment NOT be automatically applied THEIR way was to send your payment in an over-sized envelope and attach a letter that specifically directs that the payment be applied to the principal balance. The over-sized envelope trick forces the envelope to be opened by a live body, not by machine (as most of them are) and that's the ONLY way to get 'personal' attention. I don't know if the Truth in Lending Act applies specifically, but I believe it does say that all terms MUST be spelled out.
