I know how you feel. I had to let my house go to foreclosure when I moved - it was on the market for 8 months at 100K - it sold for 68K, just barely over the 1st mortgage amount. I received a 1099-A form on the 1st and that has been all. House sold at auction (took THEM 8 months to sell it) in Dec 2001. In Dec 2002 (I found the record), it sold again for just under 100K - the original buyer never lived in it, just bought it to resell. If I could have sold it for that, I would have a lot fewer concerns today. Anyway, the 2nd mortgage (equity loan), was never satisfied, it is now hanging over my head as a whopping unsecured debt. I expect they'll sue at some point, then I file for bankruptcy. You need to find out if the same happened with your equity loan. If it wasn't paid off, its probably hanging out there in collections.
