Most states do not have post dating laws so the bank or individual can cash it even if it is post dated. Check if your state has such a state law and also banks have tellers then the checks go through another person in a proof department that catch any wrong transactions. If you have a post dating law in your state, it would most likely have been caught. Some banks with ample prior notice will hold a check until the date. The error sounds as if it was with the company you wrote it to. If you asked them if it was ok and they agreed then you need to take up the issue with them.
