I live in Illinois and I have a past due account for a dentist's office for approx. $450 dated 11/1998. They have sold this to a collection agency who is now trying to collect on this. I'm currently a full-time student and not working. What is the best way for me to handle this? When they called last week about this I told them I could pay $5.00 a month since I do not have a job. I have not paid them anything yet, I'm afraid if I pay something they will re-age the account. I believe this would be classified as an open account with the SOL occuring in November of this year.

My question is this: do I just pay the $5.00 a month until November and then send them a cease and desist letter? do I just ignore it and hope they go away again? or do I try to make a settlement with them?

What option will have the least negative impact on my credit reports?

Thanks in advance,

Angie
