Validation Letter Question

If I never received a letter from the collection agency validating my account, is there anything that can be done to me regarding payment? When I contacted the collection agency (per the number the charge card company gave me), they stated they have no record of my name or the ex-husband's name being on record. I am assuming that the collection letter went to the ex husband's address. If that is the case, can anything be done to me?
