I'd take a copy of the legal guide DC-2; Summary of the Fair Debt Collection Practices Statutes. It is put out by the Calif. Dept. of Consumer Affairs. You can down load it at:

www.dca.ca.gov/legal/dc_2.pdf Read page 9, parg. 2. "It is a violation to attempt to collect a claim that is too old to be enforceable." The endnote refers you to Kimber v Federal Financial Corp., 668 F. Supp. 1480 (M. Dist. Ala. 1987) where the court held that it is unfair under the federal statue to file a time-barred collection suit against a consumer, and that it is deceptive to even threaten to file such a suit.
