Falling behind on your student loans? Be careful -- U.S. marshals soon could knock on your door. On Thursday, marshals arrested four people in Minnesota who failed to appear for court-ordered debtor exams, in which debtors are asked to provide financial data to help the government collect overdue payments on federal student loans. "Operation Anaconda Squeeze" is part of a larger effort to collect student debts, U.S. Attorney Thomas Heffelfinger said. The U.S. Attorney's Office started last Friday with a list of about 150 people who had not responded to requests for information, Heffelfinger said. Marshals spent seven days trying to acquire the information via phone or written request. Debtors who did not respond were ordered by the court to go through a debtor's examination. If they did not show up, an arrest warrant was issued. Heffelfinger said 57 debtors provided the information needed to void the warrants and were not arrested. Thirty people on the list were either dead or no longer in the state. Marshals appeared at the doors of 10 debtors, prepared to arrest them if they did not cooperate. Six did cooperate, phoning in the information to the U.S. Attorney's Office. Four were arrested. After a judge ordered them to turn over the information, they were released. They could not be charged with a crime, but the government was able to access the information it needed.
