New Prolbem on account that should have been charged off

I just found I have a new problem. I had a credit card with Providian...big total. Lost my job, couldn't make payments..they have billed me and added late charges and penalties for two years! Now the bill is half again greater than the amount I originally owed. The finally after two years it is sold to a CA in California. I received a letter from that agency and they said I had 30 days to dispute the amount. Well it should be 1/3 less that what they show Since providian did not abid by the 180 day charge off. My husband thinks I should write them and dispute the amount. But the problem I see is that even if I dispute it...I still can't pay. So should I dispute it and if so how? I am in Missouri, but opened the account when I lived in Ohio, before my marriage.
