My husband did contact them regarding re-payment about 3 years ago, but they insisted on having no less than $250/month, which we absolutely, in no way shape or form could afford. He made them an offer of what we could afford, and they said no, so he said forget it and hung up. I do file my taxes as "married filing separately" just because of this. One year they take his refund, the next year they don't. We never know for sure. He claims enough during the year now that he gets his money in his paycheck, therefore, eliminating a big refund. As a matter of fact, whether we filed jointly or separately this year, we are going to have to pay....not much, but still something.

I pay all the bills in our household and handle all the money with no objections whatsoever from my husband. I'm tired of being the one to always handle everything, so I've tried to make HIM responsible for his student loans, not me. BUT, he is the kind of person that won't worry one bit about it until something happens, and I know it will someday.

Can anyone answer my original questions.....If and when they ever do come after him for payment of his student loans, can they take money from our joint account?
