me again. this time tax lien

i've got a tax lien from the state of georgia that was placed in 1997 for the tax year 1996. i've got two payments left (i'm going to go ahead and pay it off now). i talked to someone about taking it off and he said they had no control, mentioned the 7 years and said i would have to talk to the cra. does the 7 years stand? or is there a way to take this thing off my credit? i think it may be worth a couple of points.....
