Once you've been sued you lose a lot of leverage. If you think a collection hurts your credit report, wait until a judgment {paid or unpaid no difference} hits your report. Pay them.
A little hint. When someone sues you for a modest amount of money you can bet it is personal and not about the money. This doctor obsvisously does like patients who don't pay.
