There is a new law in California that "gift certificates" for which the buyer paid face value cannot expire.

So, if you buy a $10 gift certificate at Blockbuster and pay $10 for it, it can never expire.

This law doesn't apply to "coupons" that you might cut out of the newspaper, or for gift certificates that you pay less than face value for (like if you pay $5 for a $10 gift certificate).
