7 year credit card debt

I recently received a letter from a collection company that is trying to collect a credit card debt from me from back in 1994. I advised them to send me proof of this debt but they would only send me another "demand letter". They kept calling me at work threatening to garnish my wages and take me to court. I panicked and started sending them $50/month (which my boyfriend disagreed with, he wanted me to let them take me to court). I now unemployed and they are now threatening to take me to court if I do not come up with money to pay them off. What are my options here? These people are driving me suicidal....please help...Thanks
