Only have one account on CR..a negative item..how to establish credit?..

due to me only having 1 account, a bad one, I don't have a credit score. The bad account was with Providian, a $250 limit I let go for 8 months, then paying $880 to close it. Due to go off 2/07. My question is, how do I establish credit? Credit Cards? What is the likelyhood for a car loan, etc?
