Credit Card Debt Past SOL Not On Credit Report

I have been contacted by Allied Interstate, A CA about a credit card debt that I have not paid on in almost 10 years. It has been so long that the Charge Account is no longer on my credit report. I want to send an SOL letter but have no idea what the date of the last payment was on the account because it does not appear on my credit report. What should I do? Is the Debt Validation Request letter the first step here? How can I verify when the last payment was on the ballance?
