Warrant in Debtf

I just receive a "Warrant in Debt" notice (to my old address) from Capital One. It seems that they have arranged a court date to try to obtain a judgement against me. Should I even bother attending without a lawyer? I owe them less than $700 dollars. It was to my understanding that they have to attempt to collect the debt for a year before they seek a judgement. Its past due since October 2002. Not that long ago. Doesn't that seem a bit hasty. I've never been contacted by any collection agency attempting to collect the debt for them either. What should I do. I am a college student, expecting mother, and not making a lot of money.
