I've read through these posts and decided to create my own reply because I, too, suffer from Bipolar and went through similar circumstances. Bipoloar is actually classified as a mood disorder, not a true mental illness. I used to have a very high paying job and when I stopped working, my new husband and I filed Chapter 7. At no point in any of the conversations was mental illness or Bipolar ever brough up by the attorneies, judge, or myself. Out of about 40 creditors, the only one that showed up was Sears, who offered to reinstate my account and knock off all but $800, plus report it current. I accepted this, but shouldn't have. Should you bring up that you have Bipolar or state in the record that you have a mental illness of any kind, you may find the court appointing someone to handle your money and this ommission will haunt you the rest of your life, because once in a court document, it becomes public record and should you ever do as I did and get sick and tired of being sick and tired, you may decide to return to work and the ommission may bar you from many opportunites. And yes, there are many medications but I have found since I lost my insurance and got off of about 12 of them, I feel better, am happier, and healthier. It may be the awnser for you but it wasn't for me. I wish you the best of luck in your financial, as well as your emotional health.
