It still doesn't make sense to me

How can a credit card company place a charge for an annual fee on the card the same day the account is opened, which is charging it in advance, but when you cancel the card in that first month after usig it to make one purchase, they seem to think you are not entitled to any part of that annual fee back. Annual meaning yearly, would mean I paid for a year and only used a month, further they charged the annual fee without first giving me a year's worth of service.
