Hi -

We have a really nasty situation with a collection account from a dentist visit for our daughter almost two years ago and now showing on our credit report.

Our insurance denied a claim that they previously approved and we could not figure out why. We went through over a year of appeals to Blue Cross for this procedure, all the while we were speaking weekly with the dentist's office. The office staff were really nice and were helping us with the appeals process. It was this huge mystery why BC wouldn't pay and we were all kind of working on it together. We NEVER refused to pay, they just knew the situation and were helping us work it out with BC.
We just found out a few months ago that the reason BC wouldn't pay was due to the way the dentist reported the proceedure (incorectly). So we told the dental office this, they were suppose to ask the dentist to change the claim report. We didn't hear back and the denist himself was impossible to reach. I sent another letter to BC explaining that their so-called "in plan" denist was the person who caused the claim to be denied, and waited to hear back from them.
Just recently we found out that a few months ago, the dentist sent the bill to a collection agency and they put a report on our credit.
I called the dentist's office Friday to say that we would pay the bill that day if they could just take the report off of the credit....and woah...no more nice guys!!!
There is a billing woman there on a MAJOR power trip. She basically feels that it is her reponsibility to "teach us a lesson" about paying our bills. We explained that we had been in contact with them and at no time did they demand payment beyond sending out statements and that they were helping us with appeals and knew what was going on every step of the way. I said we would pay over the phone that minute, but she said there was no way they would remove the notation from our credit. I asked to speak with her supervisior and she said she reports to no one. Also, she was lying to us about where the dentist was, she said he was out of town for three weeks, my husband found him at one of his offices, but he won't take the calls.
My husband called the BBB and there are ALL kinds of reports against him and his office, law suits and malpractice suits and just a whole mess of stuff that makes me think there is no way we will be able to appeal to his desire to keep this matter quiet and just take the money.
It is only $300 so they probably aren't desperate to get it either. I am going to try to write them a letter and get them to reconsider but - seriously - they seem to enjoy being rude about this. The office manager woman hung up on my husband today!
What else can we do? My husband is so flaming mad he was talking about sueing them for damages for malicious reporting against our credit or something...isn't there something we can do?

Thanks in advance for the help!

Kim
