Before Jan. 1998 when the FCRA went into effect there was no way of checking a creditor's following the "180 day" chargeoff rule. Many kept the accounts open on their books for up to a year after default.

If you are talking about the SOL for credit reporting, then, unfortunately,if it was charged off prior to Jan 1998, your 7 years starts from THAT reported chargeoff date. If it was charged off AFTER Jan 1998, the creditor, by law, was obliged to report to the CRAs the first default prior to the chargeoff. On your Experian report it should show a removal date.

If, on the other hand, you are trying to find the LEGAL SOL for your State, you would need some kind of proof of your last payment to the OC, or a billing statement that showed you as past due.
