AOL themselves are nasty. My daughter signed up on accident online and the bill came through my phone bill and it was finally Pacific Bell who got rid of it, AOL wouldnt budge.

First he should make sure that the account is closed, no new charges. Then, AOL might have a department that handles fraud. Have his ask about it. They mentioned something like this to me, but since it was my won daughter, I didn't go there. Have him ask them what they do in cases of Ientity Theft.

Do they have his Social Security number? Will they report to his credit report? Some companies don't, for stuff like this.
