Are free credit reports worth it?

Are "free" credit reports worth getting? Which one is best? Am I better off just paying for the 3-in-one report? I assume the report is free because the company figures you are too lazy or will forget to cancel the credit management membership...or they may it difficult to cancel within the 30 days.
