Dealing with a judgement

I'm worried after all of the posts I have read about Discover card being nasty to deal with. I have a newborn baby and it is impossible for me to keep up with the bill I am paying from them right now. If they do decide to sue me then what are my options? I am not employed at this time and I will not be employed for a while, since I will be attending graduate school this fall. It has been 3 months since I have paid my bill with them. Should I call them and try to reach a negotiation? If I am sued, how much will they settle for and what exactly does a judgement even mean...does a judgement start over again for 7 years on my record and can it earn interest? I am currently living in Wisconsin but will be moving to Illinois. Thanks for anyone who can help me.
