Validation and collecting from multiple people?

Hi everyone,
My Mom recently got a phone call from a CA about some medical bills she didn't realize had even been sent to collections. When she told the CA that she wanted validation, she said that she would garnish
take money out of her checking account in the morning
if she didn't set up a payment arrangement. She agreed, but said she still wanted validation. A letter
came two days later, but only had dates of service.
Here's the kicker- this CA already tried to collect
one of these charges from me- I was a student on
my Mom's insurance at the time. Can they try to collect from two different people? I did not pay
this, as I know some of the charges were not correct.
