you might want to have your husband check out consolidating the loans (if govt issued) through the US Dept of Ed's William D. Ford program.

You will have to use the income-contigent based repayment plan as I believe these loans are in default status. The repayment amount monthly will be based upon your annual income. **Not sure if they will just base it off of your husbands salary alone or both combined salaries**

I recently consolidated my defaulted loans through this program and I have to say this was the smartest move I made and should have done it some time ago.
