Seven Year Time Limit Question...

when it says, a 7 year time limit, starting from the date of the original deliquency, what exactly is that on your credit report. is that the "date of last activity" as noted on the credit report? something was just posted on my credit report, and it said the last date of activity was 7/97. i cannot believe they waited so long to report it, it had been so long, i honestly forgot that i even owed this company. so if i am reading the credit FAQ's right, does the seven year time limit end on 7/04? thanks for your help
