Pending transactions more then actual price?

I've noticed at a few places when I use my credit card there is a pending transaction and it's higher then what I paid. Once it becomes finialized, it's at the correct price, but why is the pending transaction ammount higher then the actual price? Seems to me that it should be the same. Thanks for any help
