Garnishment of wages

If a garnishment order is served on an employer to withhold money from an employees check, and the employee had a payroll deduction going directly to a bank account, does the garnishment cover the check before, or after it gets deposited to the bank account? Does a garnishment order have to be served separately on the bank account?
