The problem is more than likely the secured card will be offered by a subprime lender. You don't want to be applying for prime things and have someone wonder why is the only thing on this report Orchard or Monogram?
Personally, I'd speak with a CU or a small local bank {preferably one that you've a positive relationship} and ask about a credit card with a modest limit.
If you do any sort of secured loan, be certain they report to the CRA's.
